DuVall Elementary School

Week of March 18-22

Dear DuVall Families,

Thank you to everyone who volunteered and donated to our Community dinner last Friday. Everyone had a wonderful time, especially our students. Many thanks to our PTA for providing healthy snacks for our staff during conferences last week.

Our book fair is this week. Here is a link to a letter about using online fo payment so your child doesn’t have to bring cash to school: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BJSiJQxMJYAv_AJb0duoaT2LIn6eseht/view?usp=sharing Thank you Joyce Dunlap for all of the years of managing our book fair. Joyce’s youngest moves to middle school next year so she will be stepping down from this position.

As you know we have been focusing on behavior. I have made more phone calls home this week and want to express my appreciation to all of you that are supporting us and helping us reteach your child our behavior expectations.

Vocal music is part of our curriculum and our students receive grades for this class. All students are expected to participate in their music class, even during Ramadan. If you prefer your child does not participate during this time of year you must provide a written note. If you do send in a note your child will be able to stay in the office during music class. If your child becomes a behavior problem while in the office you will need to supervise him/her during this 45 minute time each week. Please let me know if you have any questions.

This week’s notes:

  • We have switched the March is Reading Calendar slightly. Monday will now be Multiple Sclerosis Awareness month. We have staff and family members with MS and many who have been affected through their own friends and family. Please wear orange on Monday to show your support for those struggling with this disease. Friday will now be red, white, and blue day.
  • Spring break is March 23-March 31. We return to school on April 1st.
  • Parents, I need your help. Someone is clogging the boys toilet with paper towel and toilet paper in the hallway bathroom which is causing flooding in our basement and sometimes overflowing in the bathroom. We do not know who is doing this but it is probably someone whose classroom is on the first floor. Since kindergarten has restrooms in their class it probably isn’t a kindergartener. If you have a son in a first floor room please talk to him. We are discussing expectations and vandalism at school as well.
  • We will have a Clean-Up Parade on May 22 in the afternoon. These are no longer held in the street. Our students will walk around the block on the sidewalk like we do for Halloween.
  • Our Lost & Found is filled to the top. Please stop by and take a look if your child is missing anything.
  • Just a reminder, if you are not receiving text messages, please call the office and let them know so they can fix this issue. 313-827-2750
  • Our Holiday Shop letter was sent home last week with more detailed information. We need volunteers and would love if parents could help their own child’s class when they shop. This should only take about 30 minutes. Here are link to donate bags and to volunteer. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DACAE28A7F8C61-45727403-holiday https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2I2PKN5CM0RZG?ref_=wl_share
  • Our Change Challenge will be April 2-5. This fundraiser will benefit Zaman International and DuVall’s Ga-Ga Ball Pit. See the flier for more information: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aoOHTzdigvz5C02mLfUu1YYYFyap-yin/view?usp=sharing
  • Once again we have been given the Evergreen status as a Green School. Thank you Mrs. Hughes, Ms. Stupar, Ms. Mendez, and our Green Club.
  • We have some very active Fifth Grade parents. As they move to middle school with their children they leave positions open within our PTA. We need a Membership Chairperson. This position requires you to type information into a document, primarily during the first month of school. Usually this person will work at the PTA table during Open House. There is time for this parent to visit the rooms his/her child(ren) will be in as well. We also need an Assembly Chair. This position requires the booking of assemblies for ur students. We receive lots of emails with assembly possibilities so you do not need to start from scratch. If you are interested in either of these positions please let me know and talk to Jaclyn Noles, who is usually on the playground before and after school.
  • Our Ice Cream Social will be here before you know it! We are requesting donations to help cut our costs and create more profits. Please click on this Sign-Up Genius link to donate items. If you have items that will not expire before May 31 we are happy to store them so you can drop them off anytime. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084DACAE28A7F8C61-47224485-icecream
