Dear DuVall Elementary Families,
I am excited to begin our new school year. Many thanks to all of the people who have been hard at work this summer to prepare our building for staff and students, especially our engineer Dave Brice and our custodians Jeta Kamberovska and Carol Kelley. Our project superintendent Patrick McCarthy, has also been working hard managing all of the construction. Our school will be ready to go on the first day, August 28. Unfortunately, the air conditioning will not be completed by the first day but we are hopeful it will be ready before too long.
I look forward to us working together to provide a memorable, challenging, and fun school year for our students. Staff Changes:
- We are sad to announce that Ms. Grahl will no longer be at DuVall. She has accepted an ECS position with the district and will be at Whitmore Bolles and Oakman.
- Welcome to Isabelle Stupar, our new first grade teacher.
- As you know, Ms. Chromicz retired at the end of last year. We welcome Mrs. April Crawford as our new Special Education Resource Teacher. Mrs. Crawford comes to us from Detroit and has many years of experience.
- Ms. Meyer also retired. The district will be placing our special area staff soon. I will send an email with changes that affect DuVall.
- Mrs. Talluto has another position within the district. Welcome to Ms. Jennie Morey as Ms. Ranka’s share-time partner. Ms. Morey comes to us from Haigh with many years of experience in Dearborn. She began her career at DVall and also did share-time at Nowlin and Long when her children were young. When Mrs. Morey was first hired she was hired at DuVall and in room 106 (Mrs. Ross’s current room).
Important Dates
- Friday, August 25, 1:30-3:00: Open House, due to construction we will hold Open House on the playground. Class lists will be posted at this time. Our PTA will be giving out popsicles and will also be available for you to join their great organization. They will have some spirit wear available too.
- Monday, August 28th: First day of school (8:55 first bell, 9:00 am classes begin – 12:05 am). Breakfast is served at 8:35. No lunch will be served.
- Tuesday, August 29th: First full day of school (8:55 first bell, 9:00 am classes begin – 3:55 pm) for grades 1 through 5. Breakfast (8:35) and lunch will be served.
- Tuesday, August 29 – September 5: Kindergarten Soft Start (8:55 first bell, 9:00 am classes begin – 12:05 p.m.).
- Friday, September 1 and Monday, September 4: No School, Labor Day Recess
- Tuesdays, Early Release, 2:25 dismissal: beginning in October
Soft Start to Kindergarten
Soft Start is a district initiative focused on a slower transition for our youngest students into elementary school. The following information is the schedule for the first five school days.
- Monday, August 28:
- 8:55 am first bell, classes begin at 9:00 and dismissal is at 12:05 – This is a half day for our all of our students
- Lunch is not provided.
- Bussing is provided for those that qualify.
- Tuesday, August 29-31, September 5: (No school Friday, September 1st and Monday, September 4th)
- 8:55 am – Kindergarten students line up in their assigned classroom lines on the playground. See below for more information. For those that qualify, bussing is provided to school. Classes begin at 9:00.
- Lunch is provided.
- 12:05 pm: There is no bus transportation home during soft start for kindergarten. Parents return to pick up children from the outside classroom door so as not to interfere with lunch recess from the older grades. Mrs. Hughes’ students should be picked up outside of door 2 on Francis St. and Mrs. Ross outside of door 3 also on Francis St. These are the doors that lead directly into their rooms.
- For those registered for Kids Club, please register for Soft Start care ASAP. We need 8 kindergarten students to register for Soft Start Kids Club for them to run it.
- Wednesday, September 6th (8:55 am first bell, classes begin at 9:00 – 3:55 pm): This marks the first regularly scheduled day of school for our kindergarten students. Kindergarten bussing students can now ride the bus both to and from school.
Class Rosters & Open House
Class rosters will be posted on Friday, August 25 at 1:30, the start of Open House. Rosters will be displayed on the glass windows near the gym on the playground side of the building. This area is also where teachers will be for Open House.

While Dearborn Public Schools provides all school supplies and learning materials required for all students, parents often request a list of additional materials they may choose to purchase.

Students should line-up on the playground side of the school on the number assigned to their teacher. We ask that parents remain outside as students are escorted inside by their teacher. Incase of inclement weather, line-up will be inside the gym.

Kids Club
Kids Club is a before and after school program that allows parents to drop off/pick up their children at extended times. This is not tutoring, only supervisory, however students usually are able to complete homework, do arts and crafts, play games, etc. There is a fee for participating in this program. Parent Connect Update

- Can’t remember your pin and password? Underneath login in the left-hand corner, there is a link that says “Need Your Login Information?” This link will email your pin and password. (It may take several hours to receive the email)
- To update student forms, you must use a computer NOT a tablet or cell phone.
- It is important to keep all phone numbers and email addresses up to date at all times.
- A weekly email is sent to parents recapping the upcoming week and providing important information. This email is also posted on our blog. Please keep your email address up to date.
First Day Handouts
Students will receive many handouts on the first day. The handouts will include a district calendar for the year, important dates, and many other important papers. Please review them all carefully and if any need to be filled out please complete them and return them by the end of the first week. One form that you will be asked to fill out is the “CEP Home Income Report” form. DuVall’s school funding is greatly determined by this form. Please fill it out completely and return it with the other documents. The past two years we have had over 90% of families fill this out. If we meet the required numbers this year we could become full Title One. This would give us great benefits for all of our students, not just our targeted students. Please consider filling this form out ASAP. Thank you
Visiting DuVall
- We welcome parents and guardians to visit whenever they can. For the safety of our children you must sign-in at the main office and receive a visitors pass. All visitors are asked to contact the classroom teacher prior to visiting, enter through door 1, and sign in at the office.
- All doors are locked at all times for the safety of our children and staff. Please, do not ever ask a student to open a door for you. They are not allowed to do this, even for their own parents. You must enter through door 1 where you can be buzzed in and the office is aware of who is in the building.
- If there are evening events doors 5 & 8 will be unlocked after 6:00. This is the ending time for Kids Club and students are no longer in the building. Parents must accompany their children to after school events. Doors 5 & 8 are the ones near the gym on each side of the building.
Breakfast & Lunch
- Menus will be sent home monthly. They can also be viewed at: https://dearbornschools.nutrislice.com/menu/duvall-elementary
- Breakfast is available for all students beginning at 8:35. Students may not enter the building before 8:35 unless they are attending an extra-curricular activity. They must enter through door 1 for breakfast.
- Lunches are available for every student all full days of school. Lunches include a protein, vegetable, fruit, and milk. There is no cost to our students for lunch.
- If your child does not take a full lunch and would only like milk the cost is .50
- If your child brings lunch please send healthy foods with only one treat item. Please do not send in any glass containers. No soda pop, Doordash or fast food is allowed.

- Lunch times are:
- 11:45-12:25 – Hughes, Ross, Press, Stupar, Shapas Brettschneier (1st & 2nd grades have lunch and then recess. Kindergarten will have recess and then lunch.)
- 12:35-1:15 – Morrison, Moon, Alabakoff, Courtright, Ranka/Morey (2nd/3rd graders have lunch and then recess. Fourth & Fifth will have recess and then lunch.)
Communication
Please keep your child’s teacher and our office informed of any changes in phone numbers or email addresses for parents and emergency contacts. Also, if transportation or the person picking up your child changes please notify us. Everyone who picks up your child from school must be listed on the emergency card as a contact.
Volunteers
We love when we have volunteers! If you are interested in coming in to volunteer please contact the teacher a few days ahead of time to coordinate a convenient time for both of you.
- All volunteers in the school, classroom help, field trips, PTA assistance, etc. must fill out a district required i-Chat form with a copy of your driver’s license, at least two weeks prior to coming in.
- i-Chats are valid for 3 years.
- It is our recommendation that you fill out an iChat form within the first few weeks of school. If you are unsure if your current iChat has expired or not contact Ms. Bobbie or Mrs. Jen in the office, 313-827-2750.
- We are looking for parents willing to facilitate after school clubs. Please let me know if you are interested or have any ideas for clubs. More information will be included in the weekly email a few weeks into the year.
Attendance
- Our school hours are 9:00-3:55. We will come together as a school to say the Pledge of Allegiance and DuVall Pledge at 8:55 on the blacktop by the playground so students can enter school and begin their learning as quickly as possible.
- Students entering the building after 9:00 must enter through Door 1 and be signed in by an adult in the main office.
- If your child is absent please report the absence on Parent Connect or call 313-827-2751 and leave a message the morning of or anytime after 4:00 the day prior.
- Our goal is to teach our students responsibility. If your child is absent please remind them to talk to their teacher about make-up work. Parents are encouraged to follow-up with the teacher but ultimately, we want our children to be responsible. For our younger ones, they will need more follow-up from both parents and teachers.
- Students absent for 3 days or more, or their parents, should make arrangements with the teacher to pick-up make-up work from the office.
- Students are expected to attend school daily unless they are ill or have an appointment. Please make every attempt to make appointments outside of school hours so as little school as possible is missed.
- Vacations should be planned during school scheduled vacations. Students completing work during absences is not the same as receiving the instructions that accompanies the work while in school.
- Overall, the attendance of our students last year was extremely high. When totaled, many students missed over a month of school and some even two months. If there is a medical reason your child is absent please provide a doctor’s note if the absence is beyond three days. If doctor’s care isn’t needed please call the office and speak with me.
Dress Code
- Students must dress appropriately in a manner that is not distracting to the learning process.
- Please dress students according to the weather. During winter months wearing a sweater or light jacket to wear inside is beneficial.
- Shoes worn must have a strap across the back for safety reasons.
- Tight fitting clothes, pajamas, or clothing displaying inappropriate language are not permitted.
- Parents should review their child’s dress each day and make sure it is school appropriate.
Cell Phones
- Cell phones are not permitted at the elementary level at Dearborn Public Schools.
- We understand that in today’s society, a parent may choose to have their child bring a phone to school for safety reasons. If this is the case, it must be kept in the student’s backpack and not visible or used during school hours. If a student uses his/her phone or it is seen outside of the backpack it will be confiscated and the parent will be notified to pick up the phone from the office. The school is not responsible for any phones or devices brought to school.
- Students wearing Apple Watches (or similar devices) should not use them as a phone during school hours. If they do, the watch will be confiscated and will need to be picked up by the parent from the office just as a cell phone would be.
- The wearing of Apple Watches (or similar devices) is strictly prohibited during standardized testing. This rule is set by the state. Devices used for medical reasons will stay on the teacher’s desk during all testing.
Illness
- If your child is running a fever (100.4 degrees or higher), vomiting, or not feeling well please keep them at home.
- As always, parents will be contacted if their child becomes ill at school.
- It is important to keep all emergency contact numbers up to date.
Important Notes
- Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school each day. They can be refilled at our hydration stations in the cafeteria and gym.
- Please write your child’s name on the outside of their lunchbox and inside all of their belongings.
- Please keep in mind, it is a good time to begin transitions for your children. Bedtimes and wake up times should be adjusted to assist students in beginning basic schedules to help them get back into the routine of school. Most importantly, continue reading with your child each day to help prepare them for being back in school.
- When picking up your child early please let the office and the teacher know first thing in the morning. It takes away from class time when a teacher has to stop instructing to prepare one student to leave early. Knowing ahead of time will help the teacher and student be prepared ahead of time and be ready to go when the parent arrives.
- Students may celebrate their birthday with their classmates. An easy to pass out treat and a juice box or small water bottle are allowed to share with classmates. Parents must send in enough for each child in the class. Balloons, treat bags, and full size cakes are not allowed.
The DuVall staff and I would like to thank you in advance for being our partner. We realize there is a great deal of information in this letter but it is helpful for all of us to be on the same page so we can work together for the good of our children. Many items are repeated to make sure communication is met and understood.
At Open House and on the first day, weather permitting, we will have an area available to take photos. Come early so you have time to take pictures in front of our DuVall backdrop and with our photo props.

البداية البسيطة هي مبادرة من القطاع التعليمي تركز على انتقال أسلس لأصغر طلابنا إلى المرحلة الابتدائية. تتضمن المعلومات التالية الجدول الزمني للأيام الدراسية الخمسة الأولى:

○ ٥٥ :٨ص الجرس الأول، بداية الصفوف والانصراف ٥ :١٢م. دوام جزئي( يوم قصير) لجميع طلابنا
○ لن يتم تقديم وجبة غداء
○ تتوفر المواصلات للطلاب المؤهلين
● الثلاثاء ٢٩ آب ( أغسطس )- الثلاثاء ٥ أيلول (سبتمبر) يرجى الانتباه إلى أن المدرسة في عطلة رسمية يوم الجمعة ، ١ أيلول(سبتمبر) الاثنين ٤ أيلول( سبتمبر) بمناسبة عيد العمال.

سيتم نشر قوائم اسماء الطلاب المسجلين بالفصول الدراسية يوم الجمعة ، ٢٥ آب(أغسطس)، الساعة١:٣٠م، بداية الاجتماع التعريفي. سيتم عرض القوائم على النوافذ الزجاجية بالقرب من صالة الألعاب الرياضية على جانب الملعب من المبنى. هذه المنطقة هي أيضًا المكان الذي سيعقد فيه الاجتماع التعريفي.

نادي الأطفال:
نادي الأطفال هو برنامج يقدم قبل وبعد الدوام المدرسي يسمح للأهالي بإيصال / اصطحاب أطفالهم في أوقات مختلفة عن الدوام العادي وبقائهم في المدرسة لمدة أطول. لا يقدم هذا البرنامج أي مساعدات تعليمية إنه مخصص للإشراف فقط ، ولكن عادةً ما يكون الطلاب قادرين على إكمال الواجبات المنزلية والقيام بالفنون والحرف اليدوية ولعب الألعاب وما إلى ذلك. هناك رسوم للمشاركة في هذا البرنامج. هناك أيضًا مساعدة مالية لأولئك المؤهلين. إذا كنت مهتمًا ، يرجى زيارة الرابط التالي:

- يرجى كتابة اسم طفلك على الجزء الخارجي من علبة طعامه وداخل كل متعلقاته.
- يرجى أن تضع في اعتبارك أن هذا هو الوقت المناسب لبدء التغيير لأطفالك. يجب تعديل أوقات النوم والاستيقاظ لمساعدة الطلاب في بدء الجداول الزمنية الأساسية لمساعدتهم على العودة إلى روتين المدرسة. الأهم من ذلك ، استمر في القراءة مع طفلك كل يوم للمساعدة في إعداده للعودة إلى المدرسة.
